Updated: Aug 25

Today, many CDC employees were notified that their BUS code (Box 37 on the SF-50) has been changed to “8888”. This move, while expected, is part of a broader campaign to undermine union power at the CDC and AFGE Local 2883 is calling it what it is: a scare tactic.

We have friends everywhere. We will ALWAYS be here, no matter the illegal actions taken to silence us.

What You Need to Know

The Union Still Exists and We Are Strong

A BUS code change does not mean you are ineligible for union membership. AFGE Local 2883 remains active, independent, and committed to representing its members. We will ALWAYS be here, we have friends everywhere, no matter the illegal actions taken to silence us.

Despite Attacks, We’re Growing.

Since January 2025, AFGE Local 2883 has grown from 500 to over 2,300 members.

We are:

  • Operating independently of CDC infrastructure.

  • Funded by member dues through AFGE’s secure e-Dues system.

  • Continuing to represent members in EEO, ADR, MSPB, disciplinary actions, and more.

What Members Should Do Now:

  • Do NOT cancel your dues unless you have a financial need.

  • BUS code changes or separation do not disqualify you from membership.

  • Download and save your SF-50s to your personal email.

  • Stay involved. If you can’t pay dues, there are still ways to support the movement. Contact us to learn how.

This Is Union-Busting 101.

These changes are designed to confuse and discourage employees from organizing. It’s a classic tactic: create chaos, sow doubt, and hope workers turn on the union instead of questioning the administration’s motives.

Executive Order 14251 Is the Root.

Since March 27, EO 14251 has been used to justify hasty, destabilizing decisions aimed at stripping federal workers of collective bargaining rights and converting them into at-will employees — leaving many “traumatized” by the process.

Legal Action Is Underway.

The full legal challenge to EO 14251 is moving through the courts. AFGE National’s General Counsel is fully engaged, and Local 2883 will share updates as they become available. We are confident we will win — but it will take time.

Who Can Join?

Everyone at CDC who is not part of the U.S. Public Health Service can join:

✅ Any job series

✅ Supervisors

✅ Retirees

✅ Employees on admin leave

✅ Even if you’ve been separated

We are still here. We are not frightened. And we are not going anywhere.
